The River Jungle Marathon (TRJM) 2015 is now available for registration. Many of us were actually waiting for it as there were little news about it for a while. For those who do not know about TRJM, here is an extract from the promotional material from The Marathon Shop (the organiser).
“The River Jungle Marathon started off back in 2009. It was a full marathon distance, road run with no cut off time concept and at the first installment of the event, 50 participant signed up. Come 2010, the registration rate went up to 150 pax after much review and hype was generated since the first installment. By the 5th installment, the total full marathon runners had hit 1,500 pax. The River Jungle Marathon is a boutique full marathon event in which the “no cut off time” had encouraged a lot of “full marathon virgins” to take on a full marathon distance challenge. This event had taken many first marathon virgins (500 and counting).”
I ran TRJM last year for the 5th edition and there were quite a lot of people already. That was my first full marathon. It was exciting, as I was jumping into unknown territory. If you are interested, you can read my race report from last year. This year I was thinking of doing it because I had a good remembrance of it however because there was no news about it for long, I had to carry on and decide what I wanted to focus on this year. As I decided to focus more on ultra marathon races and I will run on September 12 the new Bukit Cinta Ultra Marathon. TRJM is barely a week before on September 6.

Honestly, if you remove the excitement of a new marathon, I think it was a nice race because of the “Boutique” character of it. It was 1500 runners and for sure it’s not Standard Chartered (actually the organisers were complaining to one of my friend last year that people were only talking about Standard Chartered !) with its 35,000 runners. You will feel more at home.
However there are now other marathons in town this year and for me 3R was not a bad one. The roads were closed (most of the time) which made me feel good. With TRJM you are in the boutique territory: no road closure, cars driving nearby, … this is not a problem for the first 3 hours of the race as it’s dark and still early but once you reach 7:30am you have many cars racing in Hulu Langat hills and the last stretch toward Hulu Langat feels like running on the side of a racing track… However the location is fantastic. The sceneries you can see from the side of the road are beautiful and the volunteers were very friendly.
To be noted this year, the partner full marathon ran in Langawi is no more, hence you have only TRJM… I know some people are disappointed and wanted to do both, have the beautiful medals put together…Side note, I find the price a bit steep at 130-150RM. True the focus is on the goodie bag, but hell that’s just a goodie bag. I’m not excited by these (especially the gels !).
I won’t be there this year, but if you’re looking for a boutique event, then that’s a decent one. You can register at the Marathon Shop event page.
